Meeting with SBA Administrator Isabel Guzman: A Reflection

Katherine Harrington

From Katherine Harrington, President & CEO | West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce

It was an honor to meet Isabel Guzman, the Administrator of the Small Business Administration (SBA) under the Biden Administration. Guzman, with her unwavering commitment to supporting small businesses, embodies the grit and resilience that characterize the American entrepreneurial spirit. She emphasized the importance of helping communities with economic resilience, especially for small business owners recovering after disasters. As she put it, “Post-disaster recovery has a long tail end, and we are in it for the long run.”

As a recent story in the Des Moines Register reports, Iowans have suffered nearly $550 million so far in damage from 2024 disasters, including in West Des Moines.

Guzman highlighted the SBA’s efforts in providing much-needed capital and resources to businesses across the entire country. With over $50 billion allocated, the SBA is helping businesses navigate challenges like supply chain disruptions and ensuring they have access to critical resources. Women’s Business Centers, veteran outreach programs, and local SBA teams are on the ground, offering hands-on support to the 260,000 small businesses in Iowa. Guzman pointed out that the nation is witnessing a “small business boom,” with the past three and a half years being among the top for new business applications, as noted by the Kauffman Foundation.

FEMA leaders, who have been coordinating efforts in Iowa since May 15th, shared how FEMA has distributed $16 million to those impacted by recent disasters. FEMA, along with the SBA, is hosting ag recovery centers and one-day resource fairs to assist agribusinesses in their recovery process.

Our discussions also touched on the importance of having a dedicated point person to guide small business owners through the complex process of rebuilding and recovery. As a leader in the field, Guzman understands the significance of simplifying processes and ensuring that businesses, particularly in rural communities, have access to SBA resources. Her focus on public-private partnerships and innovative solutions is key to driving economic resilience and supporting the growth of small businesses and entrepreneurs in Iowa and beyond.
