Meet Cal Wagner

Assistant Director, Employer Relations

University of Iowa Tippie College of Business

University of Iowa

I never initially imagined I would work in higher education as a professional, but soon after graduating, I reflected on the experiences that had been most meaningful to me and realized that supporting students was where my true passion lies. Over the past three years with Tippie, I’ve been grateful for opportunities that have helped shape my path, including relocating to Des Moines and continuing to grow in a role focused on student success.

Being active in the community and region by building relationships with people who care about early career talent.

I began my MBA (Go Hawks!) a little over a year ago, and time has flown by! It also happens to be the #1 part-time MBA program in Iowa (U.S. News & World Report, 2026).

Professionally, I’m an Inbox Zero type of guy, which keeps me organized and efficient at work. In my personal life, the first thing I do each morning — no matter whatever weather Iowa throws at us — is take my dog for a walk, which helps set the tone and energy for the day.

One topic I share with the young professionals I work with daily is about luck: don’t wait for it; create it! Let the world know what you’re up to — events you’re attending, professional accomplishments, new boards you’ve joined, you name it! When others consistently see your interests and strengths, they naturally think of you when new opportunities arise. Career luck is made by being visible.

You can usually catch me either at a hot yoga class, jamming out to Taylor Swift, or checking out a new local restaurant in the Des Moines metro.

Skydiving…or really any recreational activity that requires signing a waiver, ha!

I want to keep evolving with the university by saying yes to new opportunities and, of course, finishing my MBA. I also think adding another dog or two to the family is in the cards.

When I’m not at home (which I do love, lol), you’ll usually find me exploring Valley Junction, East Village, or in summer, the Downtown Farmers’ Market.
